Chapin band returns to Fort Myers in concert
The Steve Chapin Band returns to Fort Myers Friday, Feb. 4, in concert to benefit the Harry Chapin Food Bank. The concert will be in the Foulds Theater at the Alliance for the Arts, 10091 McGregor Blvd., Fort Myers. The performance begins at 8 p.m.
“I’m really looking forward to this concert and seeing many of our old friends,” said Steve Chapin. “I love the smaller theater; it allows us to connect with our audience in a very special way.” The legacy of Harry Chapin’s music lives on with The Steve Chapin Band, whose performances have delighted Harry’s fans for more than 20 years.
The band comprises the core of Harry’s original band with his brother Steve Chapin on keyboard and vocals; “Big John” Wallace, bass guitar and vocals; and Howard Fields on drums. The concert will feature many of Harry Chapin’s top hits such as “Taxi,” “Cats in the Cradle,” “Mail Order Annie,” “Mr. Tanner,” and others. Steve will also perform several of his own wonderful songs.
After Harry Chapin’s untimely death in 1981, Steve and the band continued Harry’s dedication to fight hunger in our world and our communities. Steve and the band have been supporters of the Harry Chapin Food Bank for over twenty years, making over thirty local appearances to help develop awareness of hunger and raise funds to continue the food bank’s fight of providing quality nutrition to all of Southwest Florida’s neediest populations.
The band returns to Fort Myers at least once each year but many of their concerts have not been open to the public, targeting special groups of funders. Their last public concert was in 2006 and included more than a dozen members of the Chapin family in concert together before an audience of well over a thousand at the Alliance for the Arts outdoor venue.
This year the band will be introducing a special guest-Jennah Barry, a rising star from Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia , Canada, who is making her U.S. debut with the Chapin band. A multi-instrumentalist and a song writer of considerable merit, she brings a rare mixture of talent and energy to whatever songs she sings. She came to the attention of Steve Chapin this past summer when she performed at Ovens Park, Steve’s summer resort. She joins Steve in delighting audiences with an exciting selection of memorable “old standards.”
Because of the limited seating in the theatre, tickets are limited for the Feb. 4 concert and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
