Mound House fundraiser turns to luncheon

An afternoon tea party has turned into a lunch gathering for Estero Island’s oldest standing structure.
The Friends of the Mound House have announced they will be hosting The Holiday Luncheon at DiamondHead Beach Resort at noon on Saturday, Dec. 11. The cost is $25 for those wishing to attend the benefit, and a choice of a chicken salad plate or a chicken salad wrap will be offered. The cost covers the entre, coffee, dessert and gratuity.
The Holiday Luncheon will be in place of the organization’s annual Holiday Tea, a fundraiser at Mound House where interested guests were able to purchase a table for up to six guests and be provided glassware as well as white tablecloths.
The fundraising luncheon for the Mound House will feature many of the same activities such as the annual silent auction featuring hat boxes filled with treats, gifts, vintage wear as well as the 50/50 raffle. Classic hats and vintage attire are still encouraged for this event.
According to Ceel Spuhler, the Mound House benefit was moved to the 2000 Estero Blvd. location to relieve the Friends volunteers from lugging dishes and food to decorate the tables. There will be a prize given out to “best decorated table” if anyone is still interested in dressing up a particular table at DiamondHead.
“It will be a festive affair,” said Spuhler. “Come, bring some friends and don that hat you’ve wanted to wear. There’s still a prize for ‘best hat’. Prepare to start off the holiday season by celebrating the joyous atmosphere of Christmas. The Christmas spirit will fill the air.”
Beach resident and actress Laurie Nienhaus will make a presentation as Octavia Ashford in telling a Victorian ghost story.
Tax-deductible proceeds go to the Mound House, which recently received a grant to complete the property landscaping and underground exhibit within the next six months. Formerly known as the William Harrison Case House, the town property is so named because it sits atop an ancient Calusa Indian Mound.
The mission of the Mound House is to inform and educate Florida residents and visitors about Florida pre-history, the Calusa Indians and early pioneer settlement.
