Having a car wash on school grounds can produce great results for a good cause.

The Beach Elementary School Library reaped the benefits this time.

K-Kids, a youth club of current Beach school fifth graders sponsored by the Beach Kiwanis, collected roughly $300 during two hours of washing 30-40 vehicles.

“We washed cars, vans, trucks, including a monster truck and one bicycle,” said Principal Larry Wood. “Everybody got wet and had a great time.”

The event will help educators financially purchase upper level library books for the elementary library.

“Because of the advanced reading levels of many of our children, we are looking to buy some books that are beyond the elementary school level,” said Wood. “Some of our kids are in seventh, eighth and ninth grade reading levels, and they are in fifth grade. We don’t have very many reading materials for those kids.”

The affable principal applauded the community support, including FMB Mayor Larry Kiker whom the students cheered when he pulled up in his pick-up.

“We were really pleased with the turnout from the community,” said Wood. “The kids got really excited when the mayor came. Along with the parents, they took special care of his vehicle. The kids said, ‘Man, wasn’t that nice that the mayor came to support us.’ That again is indicative of what kind of support we get.”

K-Kids advisor Eric Tibbs also thought the car wash was a great success.

“It went fantastic, especially to have all the kids helping out,” he said. “We actually had a lot of community support, and parents drove up to get their cars washed.”

Tibbs said the K-Kids will be helping the Beach fire fighters at their annual pancake breakfast at Station #32 to benefit Spirit of the Holidays on Saturday, Dec. 11. An early start, possibly 6 a.m., is expected.
