NAPLES FL. (Nov. 8, 2010) – The Hodges University Veterans Club, comprised of students who are veterans, will host their third annual Veterans Day celebration on Thursday, November 11, beginning at 5:00pm in the Kleist Community Room at Hodges Ft. Myers campus, 4501 Colonial Blvd. The event will be simulcast for Hodges students at the Naples campus as well.

The ceremony will pay tribute to all veterans and acknowledge the many sacrifices and accomplishments put forth which have enabled our country to remain strong and vigilant. The ceremony will feature a presentation of colors from the Cape Coral High School ROTC, followed by a speech by guest speaker, Lieutenant General Arthur Williams.

General Williams commanded engineer troops in Germany, South Vietnam, and South Korea. He had numerous assignments in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to include Division Commander of the Pacific Ocean Division and Division Commander of the Mississippi Valley Division. He also served as President of the Mississippi River Commission.

In 1992, President Bush nominated and the U.S. Senate appointed General Williams to be Chief of Engineers and Commanding General of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers. His military awards include the Legion of Merit with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. General Williams retired from the Army in 1996.

During the ceremony, a flag, originally flown above the U.S. Capitol, will be presented to Ruth Solomonson-Hughes posthumously. Her daughter, Dr. Nancey Wyant, will accept the flag on her mother’s behalf. Mrs. Hughes served as a U.S. Army MP and in the Army Air Corps during World War II. She passed away earlier this year.

The public is encouraged to attend the ceremony. For more information, call 938-7826.
