Festival to benefit autism in Lee County
The Surf and Song Festival 2011 will be a major musical celebration featuring a two-day festival in downtown Fort Myers on Jan. 14 and 15,
with 80 bands on 15 stages including national acts headlining on the main stage in Centennial Park. To raise awareness of community charities, there will be a ‘Charity Alley’ featuring ‘The Autism Experience’, and all downtown businesses are encouraged to have sidewalk displays and provide festival features and discounts.
Among the pre-events for the festival include an Autism Awareness Concert on Fort Myers Beach scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 24, from 1 to 5 p.m. Hosted by Nervous Nellies, the event will feature Geek Skwad, No Way Jose, Eventide, Downbeat brigade and a host of many other talented artists and musicians.
Other pre-events include a VIP Cocktail Party hosted by the Hotel Indigo in downtown Fort Myers on Thursday, Nov. 18. A Celebrity ‘Iron Chef’ Dinner and Live Auction hosted by the Club at Barefoot Beach in North Naples and a Celebrity Golf Tournament are slated for Jan. 14 (location to be announced).
The festival and events are raising money for the Southwest Florida Autism Center Initiative. This fund will help the Lee Memorial Health System create an early diagnosis autism center that will greatly improve the lives of family and children in our state who deal with autism on a daily basis. As one in every 110 children born in the state of Florida is being diagnosed with autism, this center will greatly improve the quality of life for these children and families.
Sponsors include Beasley Broadcasting Group, Inc., The Edison Restaurant, Cigar Bar, The Fort Myers River District, Ocean Roads Productions, the Island Sand Paper, The Club at Barefoot Beach, Logic Momentum, Inc., Nita’s Sweet Bean Caf and the Island Inn.
