Santini Plaza hosts Bay Oaks fundraiser

3 min read

With the first year anniversary of Bay Oaks Recreational Campus as a Town of Fort Myers Beach-owned community park nearing, businesses and residents have found another good opportunity to help out financially once again.

This Saturday, Sept. 18, a fundraiser for Bay Oaks Recreational Campus will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Santini Marina Plaza. The event falls two weeks shy of the anniversary of the town’s official ownership and the Beach and Lee County’s interlocal agreement.

The recreational campus will benefit from a car wash in the plaza, a sidewalk sale at the plaza shops and food and drink specials at the plaza restaurants. Many of those businesses will be donating a portion of their proceeds to the cause. The event may also have a radio station broadcasting live at the event as well as clowns such as ‘Miss Buttons’ and ‘Smokey the Clown’ to entertain the children.

Volunteers are needed for the car wash and all proceeds will help in the building of the BORC Haunted House and the campus’ 21st annual Fright Night, a long-standing Halloween party featuring a costume contest and prizes. Fright Night will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 22.

‘This is a way that we can bring folks out to support our local shops, get their car washed (donation charge) and raise money to build the haunted house,” said Paula Kiker, one of the organizers for the event. “We call it ‘locals helping locals.'”

Fundraising officials are hoping to raise $2,500 for Bay Oaks during the day and are asking those participating to bring a bag of candy (no gum, please) along to contribute to Fright Night and make this Halloween a grand time for the island’s children and community campus.

“We use the candy as prizes for the games for the kids,” said BORC Recreational Manager Nicole Olsen. “(Fright Night) is one of our premier events which brings a big crowd. We want to keep the tradition alive and keep providing opportunities for families to get out of the house, spend some time together and have it be an affordable thing to do as well.”

Fright Night admission costs include $4 per person for members; $5 per person for nonmembers; $10 for a family of four for members; and $13 for nonmembers.
