BOB PETCHER Beach Elementary student Samantha Muller, pictured with nominating teacher Kathy Brindise, was recently honored at the first monthly “Do The Right Thing” Awards ceremony.

Beach resident Samantha Muller, a fourth grade student at Beach Elementary School, was recently recognized during the Lee County Sheriff’s Office’s “Do The Right Thing” Awards ceremony on Thursday September 16, in the Board Room of the School Board of Lee County.

“I felt good,” said Samantha, who shyly talked about other award winners, particularly one elementary student who helped a man when his arm was stuck in a garbage truck.

Beach Elementary School teacher Kathy Brindise nominated Samantha by sending a letter to the program’s officials. This is the program’s first monthly honor roll of the school year.

In that letter, Mrs. Brindise wrote, “Samantha is an outstanding student who recently started her own ‘after school’ business. Sam spends many hours creatively turning socks into adorable male or female ‘Stuffies.’ She brings them to school to sell them for $1 which she immediately donates to the ‘Pennies for Patients’ campaign to find a cure for cancer.”

The biography on Samantha also stated that “since her mother is a cancer survivor, her generosity and dedication are truly an inspiration for everyone.”

The “Do The Right Thing” Awards ceremony recognizes humanitarian concern, honesty, integrity, positive decision making and heroism. The goal of “Do The Right Thing” is to reinforce positive behavior among youths and to establish students as role models for their peers.

“Do The Right Thing” partners law enforcement, local government, the business and Lee County educational community together in an effort to make a lasting positive impact on our community’s young adults.

“Samantha is a very kind, caring person who makes friends easily,” said Beach Elementary Principal Larry Wood. “She is a straight “A” student and one of the best and brightest at Beach Elementary.”
