BayWalk revs up for Bikes on the Beach

3 min read

A block party benefit will be rolling onto Fort Myers Beach this weekend.

The BayWalk group on Old San Carlos Boulevard will host the second annual Bikes on the Beach from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25. The event is benefiting March of Dimes Bikers for Babies.

Bikes on the Beach is a festival which will feature two stages with live entertainment throughout the day, a bike show, street vendors and drink and food specials at the participating establishments. BayWalk businesses include Yucatan Beach Stand Bar & Grill, Smokin Oyster Brewery, Nervous Nellies Crazy Waterfront Eatery, Shipwreck Tresaures, Lighthouse Resort Inn & Suites, Surf Pie Seaside Pizzeria and Matanzas Inn.

“We have three show bike builders under (Matanzas) bridge and all of the show bike entries for the competition will be there,” said Bikes on the Beach co-organizer and Yucatan General Manager Steve D’Angelo. “We’ll also have vendors under the bridge selling everything from clothing to leather to bike accessories. Some vendors will also be on Old San Carlos and First Street (in front of Nervous Nellies).”

D’Angelo said the stages will be set up in the parking lot at Yucatan and adjacent to the Town of Fort Myers Beach fountain.

“Most of the participating establishments will be selling $2 16-ounce Bud and Bud Light drafts, $2.50 domestic bottles and $4 Corona products,” he said. “All of the liquor companies will be bringing specials in for giveaways throughout the day. We’ll also have collectable t-shirts with the event logo for $15. All proceeds from the t-shirts, raffles, vendor fees and sales from the Coca-Cola stand will go to the March of Dimes Bikers for Babies.”

The live entertainment will include John Friday, John Hyatt and Daizy Aimless of Elija as well as Stet Howland, who will be recording for an upcoming episode of StetTV, says D’Angelo.

“All bikes are welcome,” he said. “The inaugural event went so well that we had a subsequent event that followed it up in January. We realized that there was enough draw that we needed to expand the event perimeter.”

According to D’Angelo, the first Bikes on the Beach event drew 400-500 bikes, while the second event had closer to 700-800 bikes. “This year, we are expecting 1,000-1,500 motorcycles.”

Norma Eveland, the March of Dimes director for the Southwest Coast division, thought the inaugural event went “extremely well” and thinks this year’s event will incorporate the entire BayWalk group.

“I love working with everybody from the BayWalk group,” she said. “They are very generous businessmen, and we hope the weather holds up.”

Just a reminder: Old San Carlos and Crescent Street will still be open for traffic. However, the parking spaces on Old San Carlos will be deemed for the motorcycles, and all other paid spots on the street will be available for festival goers.

“Any raffle prizes are deeply appreciated,” said D’Angelo. “There are still vendor spaces available.”

For more information, call D’Angelo at 333-4386. The event is sponsored by Budweiser and Coca-Cola.
