BOB PETCHER The Kids Can Cook TV show and Executive Producer Sylvia Garson will be on location on the beach side of DiamondHead Beach Resort at 8 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 29.

The “Kids Can Cook” television show, a program televised in New York City, will be filming again on Fort Myers Beach. This time, Executive Producer Sylvia Garson and crew will be on location on the beach front and by the Cabana’s Beach Bar and Grill area at DiamondHead Beach Resort.

The filming will begin on the shoreline at the 2000 Estero Blvd. resort by featuring an upcoming environmental segment with Ostego Bay Foundation President Joanne Semmer. Garson said the children will literally be getting their feet wet during the first part of the filming while learning about how to take care of the Florida’s leading natural resource.

“We’re actually walking in the water to show the kids the different things that are in the water,” she said. “The whole idea is to highlight Fort Myers Beach and show how beautiful it is. We’re going to shoot coverage of Joanne talking to kids about the environment as we walk in the water.”

Garson said her crew has already filmed public service announcements about safety on the water with the Fort Myers Beach U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. After the environmental segment, selected children will begin cooking different kabobs and concocting smoothies.

“We’ll be making something simple like fruit kabobs, maybe teriyaki shrimp kabobs and smoothies to keep it in the summertime mode,” said Garson. The show, which is targeting all children, is looking for a few children ranging from ages 8 to 11 to be in the show. Parents of interested children can reach Garson at 810-3256 to confirm.

“We only can accommodate four to six kids,” she said. “If other kids would like to watch, that’s fine too. We would also like to invite children with vision loss to join us.”

Sponsors for the show include The Resort At MarinaVillage in Cape Coral;DiamondHead Beach Resort; Marker 92 Waterfront Bar & Bistro located at The Resort At MarinaVillage; D’Artagnan; Cheeseburger In Paradise; Outback Steakhouse; ALLPAC Distributing; She Sells Shoes; and Ostego Bay Foundation.

Last August, The “Kids Can Cook” television show filmed coverage at Bayfront Bistro for a documentary involving children with vision loss.

“I’m trying to get major companies to help The Division of Blind Services,” said Garson. “My goal is to use this as a platform to try to get people to donate clothing and shoes to them as well.”

Garson began the Kids Can Cook show 18 years ago to wedge a gap between countries and cultures. She said the show is seen by more than a million people in the New York City area and is a federal trademark. It airs in New York City on channel 56 every Sunday at 9:30 a.m. According to Garson, the basic concept is to reach out to children from many cultures and to incorporate food from their respective countries and cultures.

“I began the show in 1991 to work with children and to bring children of all countries and cultures together by cooking together,” said Garson. “Fort Myers Beach is a real community. It’s a wonderful place with one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. People have been very accommodating and seem to reach out to help each other even though times are hard.”
