Mack urges members not to support Arizona immigration law, stand for freedom instead

The day before the Arizona immigration law is set to take effect, Congressman Connie Mack (FL-14) sent a letter to his Republican and Democratic colleagues on Capitol Hill this morning urging them to stand on the side of freedom and not support the contentious law. Mack has been a vocal opponent of the law because it infringes on the freedoms of some Americans.

A copy of Mack’s letter to his colleagues is below.

Dear Representative:

Tomorrow, Arizona’s new immigration law will take effect. This law is wrong.

Like most Americans, I am thoroughly frustrated with the federal government’s failure to address illegal immigration, and I strongly believe we must secure the border and crack down on employers who hire illegal immigrants. The Arizona immigration law, however, strikes a severe blow to individual freedom and the principles that make our nation strong. It puts some Americans at risk of losing their freedoms and having to prove their citizenship while others stand little or no chance of being affected.

The Arizona immigration law challenges the freedoms of all Americans by requiring local officials to make judgments based on a ‘reasonable suspicion’ of one’s citizenship status. We need to protect the rights of all Americans and not subject only a few to invasive government influence. Whether you are a Republican or a Democrat, the principles of freedom and individual liberty must be the basis of every decision we make as lawmakers, particularly as we address the illegal immigration issue. We must not let fear and distrust fuel this debate.

As former President Ronald Reagan once said, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same…” Please join me in fighting for those freedoms for all Americans.
