Beach hosts little league tournament
Fort Myers Beach Little League is hosting four teams this weekend as part of the season-ending Tournament of Champions in District 18.
The Major division (ages 9-12) will have Bonita Springs Braves, San Carlos Park Mariners, Lehigh Acres Tigers and the home-standing Fort Myers Beach Red Sox competing for a berth in the district championship, to be played at San Carlos starting June 10.
Bonita and San Carlos square off at 10 a.m. Saturday, with the home Sox taking on Lehigh at noon. Games are scheduled at 10 a.m. and noon on Sunday, then at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and possibly Wednesday.
The double-elimination tournament – first at the Beach in many years – wraps up another successful regular season for the local Little League.
According to FMB Little League President Charlie Whitehead, more than 100 Beach youngsters from age 5 to age 16 played baseball and softball this season, keeping Bay Oaks fields busy and coaches traveling for games to Immokalee, LaBelle, Lehigh Acres, Alva, Bonita Springs and San Carlos Park. Closing Day is scheduled Saturday, June 12, and all star teams are being created for the summer tournaments.
