St. Raphael’s hosts special shrimp dinner

St. Raphael’s Episcopal Church is having an encore performance.

The historic church located at 5601 Williams Dr. (three blocks south of Publix Supermarket) is hosting a special summer time “famous shrimp dinner” during Memorial Day weekend. Come and get your Gulf pinks on Saturday, May 29, from 5 to 7 p.m.

St. Raphael’s special dinner includes “all you can eat” peel-and-eat shrimp, beans, corn bread, coleslaw, beer, wine or soda plus an ice cream sunday -all for $15 per person. Children age 12 and under eat for free.

“This is the first summer shrimp dinner we’ve hosted,” said Roxie Smith, senior warden at St. Raphael’s. “We hope that this will become a tradition.”

According to Smith, St. Raphael’s is having the Memorial weekend dinner because of “popular demand” by the Beach’s year-round residents and summertime visitors. Profits from the event will go to charitable entities and repair.

“We feel the need to increase our giving to local charities, and a portion is going to help pay for a leaking roof,” said Smith. “It provides a means for us to come together as a Christian community and share our friendship and our sense of community.”

Everyone is welcome to enjoy the fresh, local shrimp and the camaraderie associated with the good cause.

“The people working each and every one of our dinners enjoy working and being together, which we feel passes on to all the people that attend,” said Smith. “St. Raphael’s has always been a vital part of Fort Myers Beach community and the shrimp dinners help us to continue that deep involvement.”

St. Raphael’s was designated as a historical resource by the Town of Fort Myers Beach on January 21, 2003. The first service in the newly built church was December 1953, and the dedication of the Church by the Bishop was January 31, 1954, with 42 communicants. The parish hall, which houses the shrimp dinners, was built in 1958 and became a center for local organizations such as AA, AARP, girl scouts, young people’s dances and church activities.
