Beach Yacht Club observes Memorial Day
For the 17th consecutive year, members of the Fort Myers Beach Yacht Club will observe Memorial Day with their annual “Memorial Day Service at Sea Ceremony”. This will take place on the waters of the Gulf of Mexico at Marker #1, approximately one mile SW of the Northern tip of Fort Myers Beach bearing 215 degrees. It commences at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 31.
The service will pay respect to all who were lost at sea, with a special tribute to all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our great country. For everyone to hear on the boats, the service will be broadcast over VHF radio channel 72, which will also be the working frequency for the activities.
After the reading, flowers will be placed upon the Gulf waters by participants from all boats, followed by a moment of silent prayer.
Clubs, organizations and individuals interested in participating are welcome but should contact Club Chaplain Hester Curry at 540-7200 or hbear1929@yahoo.com for logistical coordination and last minute itinerary changes. One must provide his or her own boats and flowers. Please, for the sake of our environment, no plastic or other non-biodegradable flowers or materials. A luncheon will follow at Matanzas Inn Waterfront Restaurant on Fort Myers Beach.
The Fort Myers Beach Yacht Club was formed in 1953 and incorporated as a not-for-profit organization for the purpose of promoting safe, enjoyable boating and good fellowship. This community oriented club with over 100 members and 50 boats maintains a very active schedule of year-round activities. Meetings are held once a month normally at the American Legion Post on San Carlos Island. Because the club does not have the expense of maintaining their own waterfront facility, dues are only $100 per year per couple. Prospective new members wishing additional membership information should contact the club’s Commodore Tom Swanbeck at 292-6284 or Tom@TeamSwanbeck.com or visit the web site at www.FMBYachtClub.org.
