Fire district looks to fill Explorer vacancies with Beach kids

2 min read

The FMB Fire Control District has announced openings in their Explorer program, a part of the Learning for Life career education program. The Explorer program, for ages 14-20, is a career education program geared to emphasize career opportunities, service learning, leadership experience, life skills and character education.

“We’re taking on more kids,” said FMB Fire Chief Mike Becker. “We have approximately seven vacancies. I would prefer kids from the Beach to fill those vacancies.”

The program provides a venue for youths interested in a field to become familiar with the inner workings of that discipline, in this case becoming fire fighters and rescue personnel. If interested, boys and girls of that age are invited to fill out an application at the FMB Fire District Administrative building at 100 Voorhis Ave.

The Explorer program meets monthly at Fire Station #31 (near the blinking yellow light on Estero Boulevard). The first meeting of the year is at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, April 12. Becker said any child under age 18 needs to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

“Any kid between the age of 14 and 20 can check out the meeting and join the program,” said Becker. “They can get all the paperwork done there. The only exemption that applies is a female Explorer needs two leaders at all times.”

The Explorer program is chartered by the Kiwanis Club.
