Having an awesomely good Spring Break yet??Hope so! I’m sure you’re all naturals when it comes to just letting loose and have a great time, but here are some helpful hints and tips that can make your adventure on the Beach even more enjoyable! 🙂

The Dos

4 Wear sunscreen, at least SPF 15 or higher. Apply it generously throughout the day.

4 Wear a hat outdoors and a good pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes.

4 Wear a life vest when boating (Don’t worry, there are some really cute styles out there.)

4 Swim with a buddy and try to stay close with people you trust at all times.

4 Drink plenty of water especially when in the sun or if you’re sweating heavily.

4 Know your surroundings, who you can call for emergencies and where exactly local emergency departments are located.

4 Get enough sleep. Don’t overdo the activities. Sleep deprivation can equal bad decision making.

4 Protect yourself against STDs like herpes or HIV, as well as unintended pregnancies. The best advice is abstinence. But if you do feel like getting it on, “put a cap on it!”

4 Use your own judgment. If you’re with a group involved in questionable activities, resist the urge to join in.

4 Take any medications and proof of insurance along with you.

4 Carry a cell phone with you at all times in case of emergency.

4 Trust your instincts. You know what’s right, you know what’s wrong.

The Don’ts

8 Don’t consume illegal drugs.

8 Don’t drink alcohol if you plan to drive, boat or swim.

8 Don’t drink alcohol if you’re underage.

8 Don’t binge drink. Alcohol poisoning will almost certainly land you in the E.R., or even worse.

8 Don’t assume everything is okay if you feel like you’re getting sick. If you feel ill, it’s your body’s way of saying, “slow down.” Listen to it!

8 Don’t go to an isolated place with a stranger or someone you don’t fully trust.

8 Don’t just think about the impulse, think about the consequences.

Free 5-1-1 traffic service

BTW, did you know Travelocity named four of Florida’s major metropolitan areas as top Spring Break destinations for 2009, including South Florida, Orlando, Tampa Bay and Fort Myers Beach? Pretty awesome!

But, since we’re up there on the list of hot spots to be during March/April, traffic can get a little hairy at times. A cool new system’s been introduced by the FDOT to help you out with knowing when and when not to attempt making it on the sand.

By dialing “5-1-1” free on your phone (cell phone minutes may apply) within Florida, you’re directed to five regional areas, including Central Florida, Northeast Florida, Southwest Florida, South Florida and Tampa Bay. By saying “other parts of the state,” a caller can transfer to any regional system and check road conditions on a local roadway.

It provides real-time information on traffic conditions, construction updates and severe weather alerts.

So, before you get back in the sand, brush up on some special safety tips and check out the traffic conditions so you know if you should load up some extra songs on the iPod for the trip over to the beach.
