Mack: President’s budget will bankrupt America
Congressman Connie Mack (FL-14), a member of the House Budget Committee, today slammed the largest budget in history and called on the President to truly commit to fiscal responsibility by cutting spending and living within our means.
Mack said:
“The President may talk a good talk, but his actions speak louder than words. For all of his claims about fiscal responsibility, the budget he released today is one of the most fiscally irresponsible in our nation’s history.
“Not only does President Obama’s budget double the national debt in five years, it boosts the deficit to new record levels – $1.6 trillion and increases taxes by more than $2 trillion over 10 years. Throwing money at our problems and growing the size and scope of the federal government will not help to spur our economic recovery.
“What’s more, his claim to “freeze” spending is mere smoke and mirrors. His proposed spending freeze only applies to 13 percent of the budget, and it doesn’t go into effect until next year locking in a massive level of spending for breathtakingly liberal programs. The freeze comes after the President signed numerous costly appropriations bills and an $800 billion “stimulus” plan last year that have increased spending levels to astronomical levels. If the President wants to get serious about reducing our deficit, he must start by cutting spending and then freezing it.
“Enormous government spending won’t create jobs or prosperity. Rather, it only puts our families, our children, and our grandchildren deeper in debt. President Obama’s budget won’t help the private sector, businesses, or hardworking Americans create jobs and invest in our nation’s future. Instead of increasing spending, we should make the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts permanent, reduce the regulatory burden on individuals and businesses, and unleash the economic engine of America.
“With a price tag of $3.8 trillion, the United States cannot afford a budget plan of more taxing, more spending, more government and less freedom. During the coming weeks and months, Congress must truly commit to a budget plan that spends the taxpayers’ money wisely and without raising taxes on hardworking Americans.”
Last week, Mack sent a letter to President Obama announcing that he is planning to work on three bipartisan legislative initiatives outlined in the President’s State of the Union address, including including expanding nuclear energy, eliminating the capital gains tax on small businesses, and enacting pending free trade agreements with Panama, Colombia and South Korea.
