More than 20 teams are expected to face off at the 23rd annual Fort Myers Beach Open, held at the Fort Myers Beach Golf Club on Saturday, Jan. 16. The shotgun start begins at 8 a.m.

The Beach Open golf event will give a portion of its funds to the Beach Elementary School. Winnings will include six hole-in-one prizes (provided by Heidrick & Co.,) $10,000, Callaway Irons, two HD LCD television sets and two pairs of domestic airline tickets.

Sponsors include Extraordinary Event, Lani Kai Island Resort, The Greater Fort Myers Beach Chamber of Commerce, Pink Shell Resort, Yucatan Beach Stand, Fort Myers Beach Golf Club, Fort Myers Beach Realty, ServiceMaster Clean, Southern Accents Barbecue and Catering, Bennett Chiropractic and Wellness Center, Esterra Spa and Salon, Accent Business Products, Best Western, Big “M” Casino Boat, Broadway Palm Dinner Theater, Century 21 Tri-Power, FMB Fire Department, Gilman Cioccia Accountants, Red Coconut RV Resort, Semmer Electric, Southwest Florida Distributing, West Coast Renovations, A Better Bugman and Heidrick & Co. Insurance and Risk Management Services.

Don’t worry, because there is still time to sign up for the event.

“We’re looking for more sponsors and teams,” said Fort Myers Beach Golf Club General Manager Adolpho Diaz. “We’ve extended the registration for teams to Jan. 15, the day before the event.”

Entry fee for the Open is $65, which includes the round of golf, food and prizes. Mulligans are $5 each or 5 for $20, while sand savers are $5 apiece.

There will also be a special ball drop game as well as a 50/50 raffle.

“We’re selling a bucket of balls with numbers on it where you buy the ball and register your number,” said Diaz. “We’re going to have a cherry-picker that will come out, and we’ll put a pin on a slope on the 18th hole. Whoever gets closest to the pin, wins the prize.”

Besides closest to the pin and the six hole-in-one categories, prizes will be awarded to the longest drive for men and women. The men, ladies and mixed teams winners will also receive prizes.

“It’s going to be a great turnout for businesses that want to promote themselves,” said Diaz. “It’s a great networking tool for all businesses and players. Whether you’re a resident or not, you can discover new businesses on the Beach and services for people on the Beach.”

Diaz thinks donating to the local elementary school is important especially since the recession has caused so many budget cuts lately.

“It’s good to give back to the community, especially to our future,” he said about Beach Elementary. “That’s one of the most important places to give money and gift contributions. It’s the charity of our future. That’s the key right now. Anyone can sponsor this event, not just a business but a family, resident or a condo association. It’s for a good cause.”
