The Fort Myers Beach Town Council approved a fee schedule for the Bay Oaks Recreational Campus effective Jan. 1, 2010. The schedule was approved at the Council’s Agenda Management meeting Tuesday, Oct. 27, when Council and interim Town Manager Jack Green met with Bay Oaks Ad Hoc Member Pete Yeatman at Bay Oaks Recreational Center to discuss the appropriate rates for admission into the campus.

“We did have a work session last week to discuss the fee schedule to give all you folks an opportunity to understand the method and manner in which it was developed,” said FMB interim Town Manager Jack Green.

Beach Vice Mayor Herb Acken moved to approve Resolution 09-34 and added to include direction to ‘revisit the fees as part of the budget process next year no later than the start of the 2010-11 fiscal year.’ The motion was second and passed unanimously.

The Bay Oaks facility was acquired by the Town from Lee County on Oct. 1, 2009. The Town staff has been operating both the recreation complex and the pool without set fees in place. The fee schedule is an increase from what the County was charging and, in some cases, new fees which had not been previously charged were added.

Town officials used the guidance of a five-year plan report provided by the Bay Oaks Ad Hoc Committee to develop the fee schedule. Although the committee’s report did not recommend charging for league or organized sports at the ball fields, a modest charge has been included.

“There was one issue that we had that was different from the ad hoc committee,” said Green. “That was where the league and sports teams utilizing the facilities was to add a $2 charge (per child) on their annual fees to help pay for the maintenance, equipment and supplies.”

There are certain provisions within the fee schedule to allow the Town Manager to modify the facility rental fees on a case-by-base basis. This fee schedule will assist staff as a marketing tool for bringing in events and to help offset operations costs of the campus.
