The Salvation Army kicks off bell-ringing season
Tis’ the season for the famous Red Kettles to be out on major pedestrian thorough fares with an army of dedicated volunteer bell ringers jingling their little bells. Thousands of families depend upon the assistance provided by The Army both during the holiday season and throughout the year. “The need is still great. There are so many people, especially in this economy, who are struggling and wondering what they’re going to do for Christmas,” said Major Penhale. “It’s hard for them to provide basic things, much less the extras.”
The Salvation Army knows that it has its work cut out for them this year. With the economy still being the “Grinch,” it is relying on some very generous community partners. Businesses like Lee Memorial Health Systems, Val Ward Cadillac, Sutherlin Nissan, Fort Myers Toyota, Sam Galloway Ford, Budget Rental, Sprint, The News Press, and Edison Mall have rallied together to make the Red Kettle Kick-off go off with a hitch.
Another important aspect that is vital to the success of the Red Kettle Campaign is the volunteer bell ringer. Last year, volunteer bell ringers accounted for 5,500 hours during the Christmas season. But there were 10,000 unmanned hours for the over 70 Lee County kettles sites.
Individuals, church groups, civic groups, sororities, fraternities, senior groups and youth groups are all encouraged to be bell ringers. If you think you Got Bell, then call 278.1551 ext 210 and ring for those who need the merry in their Christmas.
For over 58 years, The Salvation Army of Lee County has been providing assistance to families during the Christmas season. Christmas is the largest fundraising and outreach event of the year. Monies raised during the Kettle Campaign go not only to support the Christmas Cheer (distribution) program, but also allows the Army to continue providing services and programs throughout the year.
