Pilot club assists children with butterfly projects
The Pilot Club and Foundation of Fort Myers Beach, is a service organization committed to serve by furthering Pilot International’s humanitarian efforts through charitable, educational, and research programs in communities throughout the world. As part of that effort the Beach Pilot Club is involved in numerous youth programs throughout the year. An educational project aimed at the younger set is the Butterfly Garden at Beach Elementary School. Every month the “Butterfly Ladies” from the Pilot Club present a hands-on program to the Beach Elementary kindergarten class. The students listen to a short presentation about butterflies and then divide into three groups. One group does a butterfly craft, one group plays a game or does a puzzle and the third group either goes out to the butterfly garden to works in the garden or they listen to a story such as The Hungry Caterpillar. The students help maintain the butterfly garden which is directly behind the kindergarten classroom by watering and planting plants etc. The day ends with butterfly cookies and a song about the life cycle of butterflies. This month Pilot club members assisted the students in making paper mache chrysalises. Next month they will break the cocoons, releasing the butterflies.
