On October 19, members of the Estero Island Garden Club learned about the history of the Mound House, going back to the time that the first family, the Cases, came to live on Fort Myers Beach in 1889. Theresa Schober, Cultural Resources Director for the Town of Fort Myers Beach, also described the efforts and funding agencies that have so far contributed to restoration of the Mound House, its surrounding grounds and the underground museum. The museum is scheduled to open in March, 2010. On Nov. 1, the Estero Island Garden Club will travel to Useppa Island to view the beautiful, lush vegetation and flowering plants that give the island its tropical feel. Members will have lunch at the Collier Inn and afterward visit the Barbara Sumwalt Museum, which depicts 10,000 years of the island’s history.
