BORC hosts Halloween Fright Night
The 20th annual Bay Oaks Halloween Family Fright Night is set to haunt residents and visitors of Fort Myers Beach tonight, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. There will be a $4 admission charge per person at the gate or pay $10 for a family. Each paid admission will get 20 tickets for each kid. Additional tickets will be available for 25 cents each.
For the first time in the event’s history, members of the Town of Fort Myers Beach will host the event after taking over the popular recreational site from the County at the beginning of the month. They are anticipating a ghoulish time for all.
“I expect the event will be a great success,” said Town Recreation Manager Nicole Olsen. “This is for the kids to get together for the fun and to play games and, hopefully, get spooked.”
Like in previous years, Halloween Family Fright Night is co-sponsored by the Beach Elementary School’s Parents-Teachers Organization and the Fort Myers Beach Fire District. This year’s event is in cooperation with Lee County Parks and Recreation, whose staff will help out with the costume contest.
Olsen says the Halloween party events will include ghost stories, the haunted house, a coloring contest and a costume contest. There is still room for volunteers for such functions as helping build the haunted house; dress up and act in the haunted house; tell ghost stories in the designated ghost story area; and provide or run a carnival game in the gym.
If your time is short, sponsors for the event are always needed. Donations like candy (no gum!), decorations, small prizes, costume makeup, and plain old cash are welcome.
For both causes, call the Bay Oaks Recreational Center at 765-4222.
“We’re still actively seeking volunteers and sponsors to make this event a huge success for our residents and visitors,” said Olsen.
Local contributing businesses include the Red Coconut, Topps and Publix supermarkets, Coldwell Bankers, Lahaina Reality and Outer Island Mortgage company. Winn-Dixie Supermarket and Perkins Restaurant have also helped and donated bake goods for the cake walk. Food and drink concessions will be provided by the Beach PTO.
Last year, the event brought in close to 600 people from the community.
“We have the same expectations this year,” said Olsen. “This event has a
tradition of providing a fun and spooky time.”
As Olsen always says, “See you at the BORC!”
