Beach Sand sculpting event labelled as World championship qualifier
The 23rd annual American Sand Sculpting Championship Festival will be held in the southern end of Fort Myers Beach on Nov. 2-8. The new format will include professional sculptors with the winner qualifying for the 2010 World Championships.
Sixteen master sculptors with 37 World titles between them will be competing at the collective sites of the Holiday Inn on the Beach and GullWing and Pointe Estero beach resorts. Among them are the reigning World Champion, American Champion, New England Champion, North American Champion, Texas Sand Fest Champion and Canadian Open Champion. Six of the country’s top women sculptors will also be on hand.
An admission charge (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) inside a roped-off area include $3 apiece for children and seniors; $5 for adults; and $10 for family packages.
The action starts Monday, Nov. 2, with two Master Sculptors “conditioning” the big mound of sand for the group carve -a logo-sponsored sculpture which will be carved out by the 16 competing master sculptors Thursday.
Trolley service is recommended due to the high volume of traffic which goes to the event. Two trolley pulloffs are located off of the Beach for park-and-ride opportunities: Lover’s Key State Park at 8700 Estero Blvd. for those coming from south of Fort Myers Beach; and Summerlin Square Plaza at 11418 Summerlin Square Drive for those attending from north of the Beach.
Six full days of artistic entertainment is expected for the whole family.
