BOB PETCHER Harry and Peg Whipple recently celebrated their 70th anniversary at the Lani Kai Island Resort.

Beach residents Harry and Margaret (Peg) Whipple gathered on the Sundeck of the the Lani Kai Island Resort with family and friends to celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary on Thursday, Aug. 20.

The Whipples met 72 years ago some 13 miles from Miami in Opa Locka. The couple has resided on the Beach since 1986. They currently make their home on Flamingo Road.

“We met on the school bus in junior high, and I was the new girl in town,” said Meg Whipple. “I was 16 years old when we married and he was 19.”

The Whipples raised three children: daughters, Alta and Pat; and son, Lynn, who has since passed away. The couple also has nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Great-great granddaughter Shyanne was in attendance.

According to Mrs. Whipple, Mr. Whipple made a living as a fireman, policeman, watch maker and a fisherman. She was an artist, craft store owner and a housewife.

Asked if she has any advice to give for their longevity together, Meg Whipple replied, “You need to have respect for each other and to give each other space. He does what he wants to do and I do what I gotta do. He supports me and I support him.”
