Local theater wins beautification award

The Town/Chamber Alliance Beautification Nomination award for “commercial” property for August 2009 goes to The Purple Heart Theater at 2915 Estero Blvd.
Some of the most unique architectural features can be seen in The Purple Heart Theater. Visitors are treated to art spanning three centuries and nine countries. The building, first constructed in 1949 as a simple beach cottage, was entirely rebuilt, but much of the original Miami Dade knotty pine can still be seen in the walls and original wood flooring.
The Purple Heart Theater was built by Sand Paper Publisher Carl Conley as a labor of love reflecting his many years as a performing artist and his connection with the Island Arts Foundation.
Since its completion in 2008, the building has won several awards and distinctions and continues to serve as an important hub for the 200 member Island Arts Foundation and also works as the editorial offices for the Island Sand Paper.
