It is recommended by the American Pediatric Association that students carry no more than 15 percent of their body weight in their backpacks over their shoulders and backs. However, 55 percent of students carry more than the recommended 15 percent and studies have shown that children are wearing bags that are as much as 40 percent of their body weight.
There are many things that can be done to prevent such dis-ease to your child this and future school years. A backpack that is ergonomically correct would distribute the weight appropriately on the body therefore reducing stresses on the muscles, ligaments, and spinal column. In order for a bag to be considered ergonomically correct there is a list of specific attributes the pack and its carrier must possess. These will be discussed in the office with each family individually.
