Fort Myers presents the cast and crew of Anthony Burgess’s “A Clockwork Orange” Thursday, August 20, from 7-9 p.m. at Barnes & Noble, 13751 S. Tamiami Trail, in Fort Myers.

Director Annette Trossbach says that Burgess’ A CLOCKWORK ORANGE asks if it is better for man to have free will to make choices that harm people and society, but have the potential to learn from these mistakes and to grow and mature, or to have a safer society by denying people their own free will. thereby making them, effectively, clockwork oranges: good and normal and juicy on the outside but merely mechanisms on the inside, programmed to behave in a particular way, with no actual self-determination.

The play incorporates Nadsat, a gang language implementing rhyming slang as well as Slavic and Gypsy influences created by Burgess which also appears in the novel. Actors and crew will answer questions about Nadsat and give demonstrations at the Barnes & Noble event.

The production will be integrate aggressive sound and visuals, featuring a score composed by Burgess that includes Beethoven’s 7th and 9th symphonies, as well as many violent scenes both onstage and projected on the walls. Adult supervision is required for any audience under age 17.

The play will open on September 9th and run through the 26th at the historic Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center in downtown Fort Myers. Tickets for general seating will become available on August 10th at www.sbdac.com. To meet the cast and crew, join us at Barnes & Noble at 13751 S.
