Accident Causes Traffic Snarl on San Carlos Boulevard

Traffic along San Carlos Boulevard slowed to a snail’s pace, following a two vehicle accident near Fort Myers Beach.
Fort Myers Beach Fire Control District received several calls reporting a vehicle accident near the intersection of San Carlos Boulevard and Siesta Drive, shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon. FMBFCD responded with a full assignment including an engine, an ambulance and a battalion chief. Upon their arrival fire fighters and paramedics found two vehicles involved in the accident, a small utility truck and a sedan.
According to witnesses the sedan swerved to avoid another vehicle, causing the sedan to crash through the guard rail and ending up in a ditch. The sedan eventually came to rest solely on its two front wheels. Emergency workers assessed the drivers of both vehicles for injuries, while simultaneously working to stabilize the sedan and determine any possible hazards. Fortunately, no one was injured as a result of the accident.
The sedan was removed from the ditch within twenty minutes of fire fighters’ arrival. Traffic was returned to normal on San Carlos Boulevard around 2:15 p.m.
The accident is under investigation by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. Firefighters would like to remind citizens of the importance of wearing safety belts when operating or riding in a motor vehicle.
