Local woman and Four Paws Dog and Cat Grooming owner Michelle McConnell is truly a lifesaver, rescuing a German shepherd who was about to be put down that day, just one month ago.

Shawnteen, a 10-year old German shepherd, was swooped up in Michelle’s arms and given a home by one of her acquaintances.

Unfortunately, Shawnteen wasn’t staying in the best conditions, and Michelle started to become worried.

“When I saw how (Shawnteen) was living, I couldn’t take it anymore, I took her home with me,” Michelle said. “She was lonely, she was living outside, not allowed in the house she was living underneath the house.”

Michelle brought her home and took care of her, grooming her, bathing her and taking care of all her medical needs.

However, with two dogs, four cats and other pets she’s taken in from others already in her care and with incoming storm season (in case of evacuations) Michelle can’t take in another mouth to feed, saying she just simply can’t afford it.

“Whatever it takes to get her a good home, that’s what I want to do. I’ll help any way I can,” Michelle said, her eyes tearing up. “(Once adopted), I’ll take care of all her cleaning and grooming. I’ll take her to the vet. I just want her to be happy and find a family to love her.”

Michelle said Shawnteen loves animals and humans of all types, and actually prefers to be around other pets, rather than be alone.

“She loves dogs, cats, people, babies, she loves everyone,” Michelle said.”

There is no charge to rescue Shawnteen, and she is fixed, up-to-date on all shots and flea preventatives, good with commands and house trained. Michelle just wants her to have a good home with people to love.

To visit Shawnteen, stop by Michelle’s Four Paws Dog and Cat Grooming anytime between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday. Or, to make an appointment for Sunday or off hours, call Michelle at 765-8111 or 826-3880.

“She’s been so pushed around. I feel so sorry for her. She deserves a good home,” Michelle cried. “I’m thinking on this whole island, there’s got to be someone that wants to love her.”
