Governor appoints Harby to Beach fire board

Gov. Charlie Crist has appointed Gordon “Flip” Harby to the Fort Myers Beach Fire Control District Board.

Harby, whose family has lived on the Beach since 1946, previously served two terms on the fire board, from 1998-2006, acting as chair multiple times.

He received the call from the governor’s office at approximately 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

“Several things need to be done immediately,” said Harby, who submitted his name for consideration a few months ago. “That’s my goal while my temporary position is in order.”

Harby is unsure how long his appointment will last.

He will serve “during the suspension of John Scanlon,” according to a release from the governor’s office issued Tuesday.

Scanlon, who was the Fort Myers Beach Fire Control District Commission chair, was suspended from office by Crist in March after being charged by the State Attorney’s Office with possession of cocaine, possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia. He was arrested Dec. 31.

Scanlon pleaded not guilty and has since accepted a pre-trial diversion program, according to court records.
