Red Tide Refrain premieres at DiamondHead

Be part of the local premiere of the new film “Red Tide Refrain,” sponsored by the Bonita Springs/Fort Myers Beach chapter of Solutions To Avoid Red Tide (START) on Monday, Feb. 9, at the DiamondHead Beach Resort. This 20-minute film, presented in high definition, is part of an evening community educational workshop and fundraiser. The event is free and open to the general public.

Come early at 6:30 p.m. for the START fundraiser to help choose the best tasting red tide martini and learn how to become involved with the local START chapters. By managing and controlling red tide, START’s vision is to improve the quality of life of Florida citizens and visitors, protect the environment, and improve Florida’s economy.

The program begins at 7 p.m. with discussions by the experts on the impacts of red tide to our community. Dr. Barb Kirkpatrick, Mote Marine Laboratory, tackles human health impacts. Denise Boyd, Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, follows with the impacts on marine mammals. Dr. Sherry Larkin, University of Florida, concludes the panel with conversations on the impacts to the economy and businesses. The film’s preview immediately follows the panel of experts, and the evening’s events will wrap up at 9 p.m. The DiamondHead Beach Resort is located at 2000 Estero Blvd. on Fort Myers Beach.

START is a grass roots, non-profit, Florida-based organization dedicated to promoting efforts for control and mitigation of red tide in an environmentally responsible manner and is committed to education outreach as its primary mitigation strategy. START was founded in 1996 and has five active chapters on the Gulf Coast of Florida.
