Flat Tire? Sheriff’s Office warns that it could be a scam

1 min read

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office asks that everyone be extra vigilant while walking through parking lots this holiday season. To date, our agency has been notified of incidents involving six senior citizens who have discovered flat tires upon returning to their vehicles after shopping. The tires are deflated by someone removing the valve-stem core from the tire. The victims are then approached by what they describe as a “grungy-looking” man offering to change the tire for fifty-dollars. Fortunately, no injuries have resulted from these incidents, but the public is urged to keep an eye out for these perpetrators, and to use extra caution while you head to your car after shopping to keep from being victimized.

If you see anything suspicious, do not hesitate to contact the Lee County Sheriff’s Office at 477-1000. If you return to your car and find yourself in a situation like the one described above, be aware that it probably isn’t someone looking to do a good deed, but someone looking for a way to make a quick buck.
