Edison State reaffirmed by SACSCOC
President Jeff Allbritten announced today that he received word from the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of College and Schools Board of Trustees, who voted this morning to grant Edison State College full reaffirmation and to remove the college from probation, effective immediately.
“As I have said often, accreditation is not an event, but a process of continuous renewal and improvement. While this is an outstanding accomplishment, we must maintain our process of continuous improvement,” said Dr. Allbritten. “I want to thank each person that has worked so hard over a long period of time to address the findings of noncompliance that were a result of the prior visit. Also, I am appreciative of the College’s willingness to work with me on realigning our academic organization, filling our leadership positions, and improving our systems. I believe the outcome of the vote today shows that we are taking the “right steps” for Edison State to better serve our students and region.”
Edison State College will have regularly-scheduled reviews, beginning with a five-year interim report in September 2017, and its 10-year review in 2022. These reviews are standard for all colleges and universities that are accredited by the SACSCOC.

Edison State offers its first $10K degree
Edison State College accepted the challenge presented by Florida Governor Rick Scott that colleges offer bachelor degrees for $10,000. Starting in the Fall of this year, Edison State College is offering degrees in Secondary Biology Education and Middle Grades Science Education with tuition under $10,000. In Edison’s transformational approach to teaching, students will complete both ground and online innovative coursework.
“By offering these two degrees for under $10K, it not only assists the students who wish to keep their student debt low, but it also meets a critical shortage by responding to our community’s need for highly qualified educators in the areas of secondary and middle grades science,” said Dr. Erin Harrel, Dean, School of Education, Edison State College. “Edison State College wants to support the needs of our community, and we know that students here are receiving the best possible education and will help our future leaders to excel in what they do. By accepting this challenge, we want Governor Scott to know that Edison State is supportive of the education initiatives at the state and local levels.”

Professor recognized by ACA
Stacey Brown, the director of the Human Services Program at Edison State College, has been recognized and awarded by the American Counseling Association for one of her recent publications and promotions of the importance of counseling. She also focuses on wellness and the promoting of mental health awareness which includes taking care of yourself, effective communication, healthy interpersonal communication, and self-esteem. Brown is the first winner of ACA’s Counseling Awareness Month Publicity Contest, and will receive a one year complimentary membership to ACA, as well as free registration to the 2014 ACA Conference and Expo.
“Stacey Brown is an asset to the college in so many ways, not only does she serve as the director and teach in the Human Services Program, she promotes the benefits of counseling to the college students and staff,” said Dr. Marie Collins, Dean for the School of Health Professions at Edison State College. “Edison State College is proud of Stacey for her hard work and dedication to the profession, the school, its students, and the surrounding community.”
To promote the importance of counseling to Edison State College and the surrounding community, Brown has placed posters around the campus, had articles published in the local newspapers, utilized the college social media, and created an email campaign that was delivered to students and staff. She is currently looking for opportunities to offer presentations to various groups about this topic as well.
