Aviation Day to benefit food bank
Aviation Day, a free, family community event on Saturday, Nov. 13, will not only show Southwest Florida residents vintage and experimental airplanes but can also benefit the Harry Chapin Food Bank. There is no admission charge, but attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to donate to the food bank.
The 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. event will be held on the north ramp of Page Field, off N. Airport Road. The main attraction will be a P-51D Mustang, which began its service at Page Field Army Base in 1945. Visitors can also see a North American B-25J Mitchell, a World War II medium bomber made famous by General James Doolittle; the training on this aircraft was conducted at Page Field.
Additional attractions include experimental, antique, and military plane exhibits, plane rides, a band ensemble, children’s activities and character appearances, demonstrations by airport police and fire departments. Food vendors will be on site to offer a variety of refreshments.
The Harry Chapin Food Bank solicits, collects and stores quality food for distribution to families in need through a network of more than 170 local nonprofit agencies in Lee, Collier, Hendry, Charlotte and Glades counties, who provide food to more than 30,000 people monthly. More than 800,900 pounds of food are distributed monthly. For every dollar donated, about $6 in food value goes back to the community.In the past fiscal year, The Harry Chapin Food Bank distributed more than 9.6 million pounds of food and other grocery products.
