Have you ever wondered howCSI’s “Bones” knows what she knowsabout skeletal remains? Have you everwondered if any of it can be applied toarchaeology? So often skeletal remains arecollected and minimally analyzed, andthen passed over for the pottery andpost holes that reveal so much abouta culture. The human skeleton recordsjust about everything about us: sex, stature, ancestry, diet, and so muchmore. The people make the culture. Understanding their remains can helpus better understand the culture.
“CSI: Archaeology” will highlight thedifferent aspects of the biological profileof a human skeleton. In this talk, Kleswill also review an archaeological casefrom Southwest Florida and show howa combination of forensic techniques, archaeology, and historical analysiscan reveal some interesting informationabout Florida’s past peoples. Hopefullyat the end you will know what “Bones”knows and see how it can be used witharchaeology to examine our past.Maranda Almy Kles, MA, MSis a PhD student at the Universityof Florida, studying forensics andbioarchaeology.
