MRTF Work In Progress Report
MRTF is pleased to report to the Town Council on the projects it has taken up, progress in that regard and the status of other items that may be of interest to the Town Council. Following is a list and update on each. MRTF welcomes direction from Town Council on any of these issues.
– Beach Raking After reviewing the changes to Sections 14-1 and 14-6 of the Land Development Code submitted by Environmental Sciences Coordinator Keith Laakkonen, MRTF approved those changes with revisions. Mr. Laakkonen will submit a final version of the staff recommendation at the April MRTF meeting. At the April meeting, MRTF will recommend a fee structure for the beach raking permits. During the month of May, MRTF will hold a public workshop for beach raking vendors and all interested parties to discuss the proposed beach raking permitting process.
– Monofilament Recycling Project On Saturday, March 20, Chair Jeff Werner will train Boy Scout Troop 999 to empty, record data and recycle the monofilament fishing line from the Town’s monofilament line recycling bins. On a monthly basis, the Boy Scouts will recycle the line from the bins at the fishing pier under the Matanzas Pass bridge, at the Mound House pier and at the Big Carlos Pass bridge.
– Recycling Bins at Beach Accesses Member Dan Andre selected, and MRTF approved, a painted galvanized steel recycling container to be used on a trial basis at two or three selected beach accesses. Environmental Sciences Coordinator Keith Laakkonen will coordinate the purchase of these single stream bins.
– 2010 Mulholland Stewardship Award – Member Charles Hester announced that four nominations for the annual Mayor John Mulholland Stewardship Award have been received so far. The deadline for nominations is March 31. MRTF will vote and select the award winner at our April meeting. Town Council will present the award at their meeting that falls closest to Earthy Day (April 22).
Respectfully submitted to Town Council members following the regular monthly meeting of the Marine Resources Task Force.
