The Yucatan is proud to host its second annual Mid-Winter Luau, sweeping the beach Sunday, Jan. 31, from 11 p.m. to 8 p.m. During the festivies, enjoy plenty of games, contests, prizes, vendors, food and drink specials, live entertainment and more. Dig out those coconut bras, grass skirts and horrible Hawaiian shirts, as the Yucatan Beach Stand, 250 Old San Carlos Blvd., is proud to host its second annual Mid-Winter Luau, Sunday, Jan. 31, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., benefitting the local Ostego Bay Marine Science Center.

“It’s one of my favorite events,” said Stephen De Angelis, general manager of the Yucatan Beach Stand. “Because of the costumes the staff wears, the weather is generally perfect this time of year, and again, it gives everybody a reason to wear that Hawaiian shirt they’ve left in the closet for the last several years.”

During the nine-hour fund-raiser and party, there will be plenty of live music from national trop-rock act John Reno and Steely Pan (a steel pan player), local sensations Dave Collaton, Nevada Smith and plenty more.

Christar, a well-known flame artist, will twirl through fire and flames on more than one occasion that day, and local spinner DJ Mickey Nightrain will co-emcee the event.

Vendors will line the Yucatan parking lot, offering guests an array of baubles and trinkets they both need and want, from sunglasses and purses to local jewelry, crafts, accessories and more.

“We’re going to have lots of vendors lots of food. I’ve been watching the weather and it’s looking like it’s going to be another beautiful day,” Steve said.

According to Weather Underground, Sunday’s forecast surely is looking to be a lovely one, with clear skies and a high of 70.

A traditional hog roast and all the fixings are sure to make anyone’s mouth water, and the frozen drink station stationed outside will tempt your palate with margaritas, pina coladas and a wealth of other tropical treats.

Enjoy the 50/50s, raffles, prizes and giveaways, on top of the fun contests people love to enter.

“As usual, we’ll be doing the ugliest Hawaiian shirt contest, as well as coconut bowling and hula hoop challenge, among plenty of freebies, raffles and giveaways,” Stephen said. “Sponsors include Voodoo Tiki Tequila, Suncoast Beverages, Coastal Beverages, the Baywalk Group, Brenda B. Music and the Lighthouse Inn and Tiki Bar.”

There is no charge to attend, and live entertainment will reign both inside and outside of the establishment.

Food, raffle and beverage tickets will be available for purchase.

Vendor space may still be available. For more information, call Stephen De Angelis at the Yucatan Beach Stand, 333-4FUN.

Stephen concludes by saying, “There’s going to be plenty of tropical fun for all. Come out and have a great time while supporting a great cause. Joanne Semmer with the Ostego Bay Marine Science Center is absolutely amazing. She’s doing so much for the community. Ostego Bay does so much that no one even sees or pays attention to. We’re so thankful for all they do. Come out and support a great cause.”
