In business on the beach since November, Ron Shepard (a.k.a. Shep) and his business partner, Tammy Lawrence, have taken over Chillers and converted it into Shep’s Subs and Tropical Treats (1190 Estero Blvd., next to the Surf Club), offering not only freshly-made smoothies, desserts and hand-churned ice cream, but also serving up homemade Italian cuisine, using Shep’s old family recipes from way back when.

Being in the restaurant biz since ’72, it’s safe to say Shep knows his way around a kitchen and proud to offer his family recipes to patrons in the mood for some fab Italian food.

Italian cuisine and hot food

Making their way over the pond from the motherland, Shep’s family’s Italian recipes have been handed down generation to generation.

Some of the mouth-watering platters on the menu include classic fettuccine alfredo, manicotti, tortelli, ravioli and mostaccioli. Or try some baked lasagna, loaded with seasoned meat sauce, mozzarella cheese and secret herbs and spices.

Not in the mood for the Mediterranean? This place has plenty of hot food to choose from. Try the charbroiled burgers, hot dogs, or Shep’s favorite, the Chicago dog.

Wraps, subs, hoagies, salads, nachos and ribeye sandwiches and more are also available.

Cool treats

Using all fresh and hand-cut fruit, Shep’s Subs and Tropical Treats smoothies’ are all-natural. Choose from strawberry, peach, apple, raspberry, pear, watermelon, pineapple, mango or make a combination that tastes so fresh, it would be easy to believe they were actually plucked minutes before making their way into your mighty mix.

“We use the real stuff, we don’t mess around,” Shep said.

For you body-builders and fitness foodies out there, Tammy said you can make any smoothie into a protein shake at Shep’s Subs and Tropical Treats, adding as much as you want to the mix for an extra fee.

The new establishment is also proud to carry locally handmade Love Boat ice cream, which is the perfect treat for creating that perfect shake, root beer float, sundae, banana split and more. Just try and choose from the 23 flavors it can be pretty tough with so many great blends.

Looking for just a classic ice cream scoop in a cone deal? Enjoy either a hand-rolled waffle cone or sugar cone with that cool, creamy goodness. And give your treat an extra blast of flavor by adding a shot of syrup, like caramel, peach, blackberry, hazelnut, Irish cream and more.

Warm drinks

Shep’s Subs and Tropical Treats has more than just cold smoothies and chilled desserts. There’s plenty to warm yourself up (or cool yourself down). Enjoy hot cocoa made from scratch, cappuccino, espresso, latte, iced coffee or just a plain ‘ol hot cup of joe.
