After a solid run on Estero Boulevard, the Waffle House franchise is coming to an end on Fort Myers Beach. Early Wednesday afternoon, a corporate Waffle House crew showed up from Atlanta, Ga., to completely gut the inside of the establishment and tear down any affiliation to the restaurant from the outside, including its well-known yellow neon sign. The tear-down crew said, among many reasons for its demise, a poor economy was one of the top. The building was leased by a franchise owner of the company, and there’s no word yet of what’s to become of the empty shell. The Waffle House was a late-night staple of Fort Myers Beach life, providing the perfect spot for a place to get something to eat and chat about the evening’s events once everything else closed down for the night.
