Roxie rolls out of Times Square

The colorful Airstream is once again on the road.

The board of the Fort Myers Beach Chamber of Commerce voted to put the Roxie back to work on the travel circuit.

Roxie has served as a stationary informational kiosk to visitors who are on their way to and from the beach in Times Square. But it’s time for a change.

“The Roxie will be embarking on a new mission, promoting the Chamber and Fort Myers Beach on the road,” said President Jacki Liszak in an email.

It was a difficult decision, she said, as the Roxie was a goal that helped pull the Chamber together a few years ago at a time when it was defunct. It was former president Bud Nocera’s goal for it to get up and running and was named in memory of long-time Fort Myers Beach hotelier and businesswoman Roxie Smith. It was also one piece of his parting advice to the chamber, that keeping the Roxie in Times Square should remain a priority.

But the leadership of the Chamber changed hands in December.

“The Chamber has enjoyed the opportunity to showcase Roxie and to serve the businesses, residents and visitors of Fort Myers Beach,” Liszak said. “We felt the Roxie would better serve our members by being virtual and mobile.”

The Chamber’s visitors center duties will continue at its office in Suite 8, 1661 Estero Blvd.
