Concerns for changes regarding B.O.S.S.
Mr. Mayor, Council members, and Administrators:
I would like to share my concern regarding the change in direction and leadership of the Bay Oaks Social Seniors. My 85-year-old mom attended the Monday, June 15, meeting and is one of the many seniors impacted by these changes. My parents have owned a home on Fort Myers Beach for the past 30-plus years and have seen so many changes. For the past six years, since my father passed away, this seniors group has been Mom’s family.
The many BOSS activities and social events have given her a social outlet, something to look forward to, and a more positive self-esteem. Aging is a very difficult process and this group provides camaraderie, support, and a friendship network. They really like each other. They take care of each other, help each other with their challenges, and have fun together. I have attended several activities during my visits to Mom. Their activities are extremely varied from baseball, biking, bowling, bridge, pot lucks, theater plays and more. There is something that appeals to all personalities and interests.
Director Laurie Satalino does an outstanding job of organizing, scheduling, and taking a personal interest in all of the members. She is much more than a director. She truly cares for them, shares their special moments, and helps when needed.
This past November, I retired from 20 years as a school board member here in Brea, California. I know first hand the budget constraints we all are facing in this economy. We were frequently faced with budget cuts that required changes in our educational programs. These were always made with very careful planning, much consideration and adequate timing, and frequently very creative financial planning. More importantly consideration was given to how it would affect those involved.
I urge you to consider all options for making these changes in the program for these seniors. Most especially give much consideration to planning and possibly working out some creative financing to make this a win-win for all. Get input from all stakeholders before making hurried decisions.
THESE SENIORS NEED YOUR SUPPORT.
Sincerely,
Susie Sokol
