State senator supports candidate for attorney general

To the editor:

I usually don’t endorse candidates in a primary, but there is nothing usual about my friend Dan Gelber. He is running to serve Floridians as their next Attorney General and you need to know why I support him.

I met Dan, for the first time as freshmen in the Florida House during the horrible recount debacle of 2000. He was only a freshman, but our caucus asked him to be our primary speaker against Tallahassee Republicans because, even then, he showed the kind of intelligence and leadership that we must have on the Cabinet with our next Governor, Alex Sink.

As a federal prosecutor for nearly a decade, Dan has battled public corruption and defended civil rights. Serving as Chief Counsel of the US Senate’s investigations committee, he helped keep our nation safe by working on terrorism and domestic security matters. And an undisputed force in the Legislature as the House Democratic Leader and, now, in the Senate where we serve together, he continues to be a champion on a variety of issues that we care so deeply about.

His compassion for others is evident in his service to the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, where he has been a Big Brother to Travis for 20 years. Additionally, at the age of 24, he started a camp for kids with cancer, where he volunteers each summer. Dan Gelber embodies the meaning of service and inspires others to be active participants in their communities. It is through his life experiences that will make Dan a strong Attorney General for the people of Florida.

Yes, he is smart and fearless. Yes, he is a husband and a father. But, he is also deeply compassionate. That’s why I love him.

If you want to see firsthand why I am so passionate about my buddy Dan, take a look at this video of him in action in Tallahassee. You can also visit his web site at www.dangelber.com.
