Lovers Key presents Treasures of the Atocha
Park Ranger Scott Murray took visitors into the exciting world of treasure seeking Friday, June 12, at Lovers Key State Park.
Murray recapped his experience on the diving crew of the Treasure Salvors -the team assembled by Mel Fisher to find the sunken Spanish ship, “Atocha.”
His lecture reviewed the 1622 hurricane that swept the Spanish fleet away and took visitors through the rich history that led up to the discovery of the mother lode on July 20, 1985. First hand stories of the twists of fate that led the team to the wreck, true pirate encounters, and life with Jimmy Buffet and the Key West locals kept those who attended the presentation captivated. Photographs and real Atocha artifacts put a piece of history in each visitor’s hands as they listened to this true life tale.
