Fish Tale Marina owners Al and Kathy Durrett continued their good will adventures by inviting a fourth-grade class from Bonita Springs Elementary School to a pontoon boat ride to Mound Key, a mini-scavenger hunt around the marina and a grilled

hamburger and hot dog lunch.

Beach Elementary School Principal Larry Wood, Bonita Springs Mayor Ben Nelson and Fort Myers Beach Mayor Larry Kiker and Town Manager Scott Janke were among the officials invited to attend the event at the 7225 Estero Blvd. location. Kiker and Janke cooked lunch by the back of the Marina’s ship store.

“This started out with the Beach Elementary School and word spread to Bonita,” said Al Durrett. “The principal of Bonita Springs -David Short -donated some used books to our cause for starting libraries in Costa Rica, so I kind of owed him a favor.

“This is the first fourth-grade class we’ve sponsored from Bonita Springs Elementary. There are three classes total of kids in the fourth grade over there. Next year, I hope if everybody likes what we’re doing here, we’ll do it for the whole fourth grade of Bonita.”

A month ago, the Durretts sponsored the Beach Elementary fourth graders to a similar trip. Mound House Director and Archaeologist Theresa Schober was the tour guide for the Mound Key trip. This time, Captain Mike Denegre of Good Time Charters and his wife, Christina, were the hosts to the historical island.

“It’s just a kind of educational process for a lot of kids who haven’t been on the water,” said Al Durrett. “This gives them a chance to learn about the history of our islands and some knowledge of what Estero Bay is all about. This is just a fun project for the kids.”
