Fort Myers resident praises boat-removing team

To the editor:

I’ve lived in Fort Myers for over 37 years and I love our beach. I spent a week at Windward Passage Resort which I do every chance I get.

The day, Wednesday, April 29, was not a usual beach day. Early that morning, crews began to remove the “newest beach attraction” from our lovely shore. A sailboat was caught in wind gusts in early April and ended up ashore at Pink Shell. It had drifted down south of Windward Passage and remained beached there. Its owner was broke and homeless and walked away – leaving us Lee County folks to deal with it.

As usual, we did. Shortly after noon, it was history; cut apart; and loaded in a Dumpster. By mid-afternoon, our lovely pristine beach was back to normal.

I have nothing but praise for the environmentalists and nine-person crew who accomplished this task. I photographed the procedure and was surprised none of the local news media was even there to note it. It surely made the news the day it came ashore, but I guess the solution of the problem and an efficient well done job is not newsworthy.

So sad and too bad because we surely need a lot more praise and positive attention than the spectacular, gory, gross news we hear daily.

Thank you to all involved and how nice to see an eyesore taken care of so systematically.
