Local high school excels in math contest

1 min read

South Fort Myers High School recently took second place in the Global Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM). The SFM team became Meritorious winners by tying schools like Princeton University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Stanford University.

The South Fort Myers team, consisting of Sarah Weber, Matt King, and Kyle Simmons, placed in the top 19 percent among all the countries of the world participating in the competition (problem A). Only seven high schools participated.

During the contest, teams of up to three undergraduate or high school students researched, modeled and submitted a solution to one of two modeling problems. The 2009 MCM was primarily an online contest. Teams registered, obtained contest materials, and downloaded the problem and data at the prescribed time through COMAP’s MCM Web site.
