Carle
It probably has always been true that those who notice the little things tend to be happy souls. Being in a library is a perfect spot as there are so many opportunities to notice the little things in people and in what it is that we enjoy and read and digest.
“The Very Hungry Caterpillar” (JE CAR) ranks today as the second best-selling picture book of all time. The book’s 40th anniversary was celebrated early this month and has become the author Eric Carle’s signature work.
Since this work was published in 1969, Carle has illustrated more than seventy books, many best sellers, and most of which he wrote. Being translated into 47 languages, more than 29 million copies of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” have sold with over 88 million of his books overall sold.
Carle’s art is distinctive and an approach it’s easy to immediately recognize. His weaving collage technique, using hand-painted papers, which he cuts and layers to form bright and cheerful images, seems to touch the hearts of children and adults.
He and his wife Barbara spend time in the Florida Keys and in the hills of North Carolina.
We have 30 some titles in our collection under Carle’s signature so there is a lot to enjoy. In addition, his signature work “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” is also available in DVD and video (J VER) and this work and related stories.
When Reading is Fun
Readers who experience a lot of fun and pleasure from their reading time have likely learned that some of the best reading comes from a blend of the old and the new. It’s true that many of us have a favorite author who has had ten or more published titles and we look forward to the next release. New and unknown authors also contribute much to the available reading choices.
In our new fiction, mystery and non-fiction shelves we try to blend old favorites with new voices so your reading choices never grow stale. Try to make it a point to pick up at least one title this coming week about whose author you know practically nothing. And for your authors you know well, check to see if there’s an earlier work you haven’t yet had the opportunity to enjoy.
Construction
Our plans for library expansion remain as active and ready to go as ever. If you’ve digested the model of the expansion project, you can see a lot of thought, planning and effort has gone into trying to make real what taxpayers and residents told us in surveys and focus groups a few years ago.
Our donations help the Library Construction Fund continue to grow. We were particularly pleased with a member of The Friends who gave us $500 for the Fund, and to The Friends of the Library for a donation of $11,000 last week. We are delighted too with the regular donations (from 50 cents to $100) left in the donation box near the model on display. Every dollar added in this matter is a dollar we don’t need to borrow.
Bottomline, we are still waiting for a loan from the bank. The bank tells us they don’t have funds to loan. Most of have heard enough in these recent ‘bail-out’ months to recognize that the economic scene is still making adjustments. As soon as the bank comes through we will move to the next phase.
Conference Room
Summer residents-if there are particular classes, presentations, and seminars you’d like for us to work on scheduling during May to September, please let us know. It helps when you let us know what you’d like to participate in as well as staying current with what is being planned.
Library Hours
Don’t remember library hours? Call for information. When we are closed, a recorder gives the hours of operation, either on 765-8162, or on 765-8163. Except for holidays, which would be mentioned on the recorder, we are open Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 a.m. 5 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. 1 p.m. We look forward to seeing you.
