Artist of the Month
We are pleased to share the paintings of Sylvia Kasparie this month. On display in the Conference Room, one can find paintings that look at and probe the beauty and features of our national parks. In a way, her display coincides with the presentation she’s doing on March 12, so you’ll likely see even more in her paintings as she brings to life her experience of visiting the parks.
Ukrainian Eggs
The Senior Zone display features Ukrainian eggs, courtesy of yours truly, decorated in the past 13 months. Most of them are ostrich or goose size with a few chicken eggs included. The eggs so decorated are called pysanky. Pysanky is pronounced peh-san-key (with the emphasis on “peh.”
Pysanky is a wonderful art. These eggs are done as close to the traditional Ukrainian custom and mindset as possible. The Ukrainians held that the purpose of creating pysanky was to transfer goodness from the household to the designs and push away evil. Different blessings are asked for each egg, for the Ukrainians felt their good wishes traveled with the pysanka (pysanka is plural of pysanky). As wax lines are drawn on the eggs, the simple shells become filled with symbolism, color and harmony. The most important quality of the pysanka, however, is the power and love which the eggs convey.
Most of the eggs on display have occupied a minimum of 20 hours of planning and decorating time; some as high as 200 plus hours.
Second Floor Displays
The case on the top of the stairs highlights designs created by Carrie Hill. She’s designed several for previous sandsculptuing festivals here on the Beach, as well as blending illustration and poetry. You’ll also see in the display her love of cultured freshwater pearls hand strung with silk unique original designed jewelry.
In the third large seashell case on the right as you arrive at the top of the stairs, notice a shelf with added seashells available through the gift of the Al Bradford family in loving memory of Mary Ellen Bradford.
Healthier
“We all know the library is great for grabbing this season’s must-read or renting videos for the kids. But what happens when you’re confronted with a health crisis and you need to figure out what to do next? Would you think to turn to the library for support-whether it’s the latest medical research, an empathetic story of the comforting words of favorite author?”
The March 3 issue of “Woman’s Day” answers this question via the experience of four people who used the library. See pages 47-48, 54-55 of that issue. It’s encouraging that the library improved the health of these users. Let us assist you too!
Celebrity Auction
Join the festivities at St. Raphael’s Hall, on March 20 from 7 to 10 p.m., as a Celebrity Auction presented by The Friends of the Library graces the evening. It’s a fun time as we present a wide variety of items received from entertainment, government, business and civic celebrities.
Admission tickets are available at $5 per person; ticket includes a complimentary beverage at the auction.
Henry Winkler just sent us his latest book signed in his unique style. We also have an autographed baseball from The Twins and another from the Red Sox. The creator of Pictureka! provided us with a signed note and copy of this award-winning game. A wide variety of signed photos will be available, most unique in their setting and pose. A program with all items received to date will be available after this Friday. Look for a link on our website for the program listing too.
All proceeds benefit the Library Construction Fund.
