Shrimp Festival volunteer witnesses generosity

To the editor:

I am writing you because I attended the Ft. Myers Beach Shrimp Festival as a volunteer. This Lions Club donates heavily to the Camp and is very active with our mission, so we like to help them out in return when we can.

On Sunday, I had the pleasure of meeting a young family on vacation from Mississippi.

Actuallly, Lion Bill Van Duzer was chatting with them first and then called me over to meet them. They had asked how the money being raised was used and Bill began telling them about the camp.

They had 4 children with them and I do not believe any of them had special needs, but I couldn’t say for sure. Two were pre-teen girls and then 2 small boys under 3 years of age.

After hearing about the camp and the kids and adults we serve, the woman took out a $100 bill and asked if we took donations. Now, this was a young family on vacation and I don’t know their situation, but they were modestly dressed with 4 children to feed, visiting outside their home state. It is a tough economy and $100 is not easy to come by. But this family was touched by our mission to serve kids less fortunate.

I would say all is not lost in today’s America, and I, for one am hopeful when I still witness random acts of kindness such as this.
