Relay For Life nears 2009 goal on Beach

2 min read

With 2009 honorary chairman Todd Smith (Joyce) looking on, Relay For Life at Fort Myers Beach is inching toward its goal of $85,000 in raised funds for the American Cancer Society.

Over 200 participants – including nine teams – gathered for the walkathon relay at Holiday Inn this weekend. So far, $81,098 has been raised for the cause. For continued donations, call ACS representative Alisha Buesing at 936-1113 ext 124.

The nine teams that walked from noon Saturday until 6 a.m. Sunday were Team Rolobar; Team Chapel By The Sea; Team AMI; Team Bay Oaks Seniors, Team Estero Island Medical Center; Team Estero Islanders; Team FMB Kiwanis; Team K-Kids; and Team Royal Pelican. The event was chaired by Marja Cook and her committee.

“I think it’s a huge success considering the poor economy,” said Team Rolobar representative Rose Loudermilk. “Fort Myers Beach is one of the few teams to come close to its projected goal.”

A wrap-up party for all committee members and teams with an annoucement for the final tally for each team and overall contribution will be scheduled for mid-April.

Contact Buesing if interested in forming a team for next year’s event.

Loudermilk thought the late night help – mostly people from the service industry – was key to the overall success and to keeping the torch burning.

“In conclusion, we want to thank all those who donated their money and time to make this relay possible. We want to especially thank all the businesses and corporate sponsors who donated prizes. Their generocity is ever so amazing.”
